Global Assimilative Ionospheric Model

چکیده
The long-term goal of our research is to develop a reliable and accurate global ionospheric weather monitoring and forecast system which can serve as a prototype for an operational system. To achieve this goal, we are developing and validating advanced data assimilation techniques to analyze diverse sources of ionospheric measurements. The assimilation of ionospheric measurements into mature firstprinciple ionospheric models will produce physically consistent, accurate ionospheric analysis, as well as the determination of important ionospheric drivers. As a result, this allows the generation of more accurate ionospheric weather forecasts. Our research activities maximally leverage the development of data assimilation techniques in the meteorological community. The application of general data assimilation techniques to ionospheric data analysis requires us to develop new mathematical techniques for both ionospheric modeling and optimization. This research will also help improve our understanding of the physics of the ionosphere and its response to magnetic storms, leading to a better characterization of severe space weather effects on power grids, communication, navigation, and other applications.

This paper studies the ionospheric response to a major geomagnetic storm of October 18-19, 1995, using the thermosphere-ionosphere electrodynamics general circulation model (TIEGCM) simulations and the global ionospheric maps (GIM) of total electron content (TEC) observations from the Global Positioning System (GPS) worldwide network. The TIE-GCM results, which utilize the realistic time-depend...

[1] The assimilative mapping of ionospheric electrodynamics (AMIE) technique utilizes a wide range of electrodynamics measurements to determine high-latitude maps of the electric potential, electron particle precipitation (average energy and total energy flux), and ionospheric conductance (Hall and Pedersen). AMIE does this by conducting a least squares fit to the difference between the data an...
متن کاملQuantification of High Latitude Electric Field Variability
Variability in the high latitude electric field has been identified as a major contributor to global Joule heating. Electric field patterns from the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE) procedure are used to characterize the E-field temporal variability over the course of 18 hours. The standard deviation of the E-field magnitude on May 4, 1998 often exceeds the average val...
متن کاملRegional ionospheric modeling using wavelet network model
A major error component of Global Positioning System (GPS) is the ionospheric delay. Ionopspheric error can be reduced by a dual frequency receiver using a linear combination technique that can not be applied with a single frequecy receiver. However, an accurate ionospheric error modeling for single-frequency receiver is required. Due to the nonlinearity of the ionospheric error, a highly nonli...
